PSI Asia Pacific Energy Forum: JET Public Pathway

Almost 90 people representing PSI affiliates in this region were participated on the PSI Asia Pacific Energy Forum that was held in Kathmandu, Nepal on 8 September 2025 prior to the 15th Asia Pacific Regional Conference (APRECON 2025).
Through this Energy Sector Forum PSI and the affiliates in the region expanding their network to build union power for public renewable energy system, providing clear direction for our campaign and progressive actions that put workers at the forefront and lead.
Efrida Gusti of PP-IP reported the forum to the APRECON stated that energy unions and allies came together on this important forum which considered how we fight back for publicly owned renewable energy systems. We heard about the global experience of failed neoliberal energy policy and the increasing use of renewable energy transition to impose a new form of green structural adjustment on global south countries.
We heard some inspiring examples through the Trade Unions for Energy Democray Network for unions winning publicly owned renewable energy systems in Mexico, Australia and Korea. Indonesian unions shared our struggle and campaign protect state owned energy utility, PLN, from privatization. We are committed to ensuring that energy is provided as a public good to households across Indonesia, which is affordable, provides good trade union jobs and supports the transition to renewable energy.
The forum reasserted our commitment to the public pathway approach, and we noted the key struggle in Pakistan against new privatization threats, and opportunities to work together in India and Bangladesh.
We will continue to build our network and support each other to organize workers, build alliances and fight for publicly owned renewable energy systems.
On behalf of the Indonesian unions, Efrida Gusti urged delegates to support their fight for a public pathway approach to energy transition both in Indonesia and across the region under Resolution No 9. The Resolution called on the government of Indonesia to pursue an energy transition consistent with Article 33 of the country’s 1945 constitution which protects state control of the country’s vital resources. It called for the government to put a stop to the predatory practices of for-profit independent power producers (IPPs). The delegates of the APRECON 2025 unanimously adopted the Resolution and to support the Indonesian unions.
